Developing Process Safety Management

Developing Process Safety Management

Process safety is a blend of engineering and management skills focused on preventing catastrophic accidents and near misses, particularly structural collapse, explosions, fires and toxic releases associated with loss of containment of energy or dangerous substances such as chemicals and petroleum products. To understand PSM and its requirements, employers and employees need to understand how OSHA uses the term “process” in PSM. Process means any activity involving a highly hazardous chemical including using, storing, manufacturing, handling, or moving such chemicals at the site, or any combination of these activities. Process Safety Management (PSM) is a regulation promulgated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Though this regulation is US regulation, it is being adhered to as ‘OSHA guidelines’ by many other countries including India. The industries handling highly hazardous substances  shall build process safety management by establishing 12 to 14 elements of PSM that are most important for managing risk of handling of highly hazardous energies and chemicals.

Mayra Safety undertakes guidance to industries for systematic development of below elements of PSM.

  1. EMPLOYEE PARTICIPATION
  2. PROCESS SAFETY INFORMATION
  3. PROCESS HAZARD ANALYSIS
  4. OPERATING PROCEDURES
  5. TRAINING
  6. CONTRACTORS
  7. PRE-STARTUP SAFETY REVIEW
  8. MECHANICAL INTEGRITY
  9. HOT WORK PERMIT
  10. MANAGEMENT OF CHANGE
  11. INCIDENT INVESTIGATION
  12. EMERGENCY PLANNING AND RESPONSE
  13. COMPLIANCE AUDITS
  14. TRADE SECRETS
